    NEIGHBORHOODS

Vinton is an exceptional blend of history and progress, of big and small.   It has a rich tradition.   It's a great place to raise young families, to pursue careers and to enjoy retirement.   In Vinton, no one's a stranger!   Clean, friendly neighborhoods abound in all parts of the community.   Home styles range from the historic and traditional to the contemporary.   Families are raised with a strong sense of neighborhood communication and friendship.   Tree-lined streets, attractively landscaped homes and apartments are all within walking distance of schools, churches, service and retail establishments.   A wide range of services and programs to improve public health and safety are provided by highly-trained, dedicated professionals.   A well-staffed police department, hospital, volunteer fire department, ambulance service and a new county jail add to the secure atmosphere of the area.

EDUCATION

Education is a great source of pride in the Vinton community.   The Vinton-Shellsburg school district has an exceptional early education program.   There are many unique and diverse opportunities available for the V-S school students, such as specific language disability identification and training, writing programs, special education, talented and gifted, and computer training and usage.   The elementary school, middle school and high school plan allows the students to graduate having had access to a wide variety of course offerings and extra curricular activities in sports and the fine arts.   High standards of excellence are achieved by high-caliber instructors throughout the curriculum.   Learning opportunities are available at the many licensed pre-schools.   Vinton is proud to have the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School, whose students are an integral part of many community functions.   Extension and college credit courses are offered through Iowa State University and Kirkwood Community College.   A two year college degree is available without having to leave the community.

BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY

Large and small, old and new flourish together in the Vinton business and industry community.   Small businesses and retailers provide goods and services which are vital to the community.   Their importance is recognized in the promotional activities of Vinton Unlimited (a combined Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development organization.)   Vinton has four banks which pride themselves on being progressive, supportive and creative in working with business and industry.   Agriculture is an important factor to the community and a number of ag. related businesses and governmental agricultural offices are located in Vinton.   The downtown area has been recently renovated and attracts business from in and around the community.   Renovation of The Palace Theater was completed entirely through private donations and has a state of the art projection and sound system.   This facility is utilized by all in the community as well as being home for ACT I Community Theater.   Good highways, easy access to I-380, and the Vinton airport (with its 4,000 ft. runway) provides added benefits to the community.
